Setting up a new computer so wanted to document the steps for that. Here’s how it is similar and has changed since I wrote one of these in 2012.
Also it is interesting for me to see which I apps I downloaded that I still use or no longer use. Here are the setup steps:
Download Google Chrome
Log into chrome sessions for personal and work
Download Simple Note
Download Dropbox
Download Zoom
System preferences change scroll direction
Download 1password
Download Slack
Set up Divvy window manager
Download Notion
Download Alfred
Download Loom
Turn on dock hiding
Download Skitch
Configure nav bar time display
Download Adobe creative suite
Download Evernote
Download Spotify
Copy over Terminal SSH keys
Set up terminal display config
Run strap.sh codebase setup
Set up codebase
Set up database
Download Java
The biggest helpful tool for getting things set up is having all my files stored on Dropbox. This makes it easy to get a new computer and know you have all your files there. It does take a while to sync a new computer, probably will take a day or so.
Apps I still use:
Chrome, Dropbox, Divvy, Spotify, Evernote
New key apps:
Zoom, Notion, Loom, Slack, 1password, SimpleNote
Apps I don’t use:
Currently not using Jing, VLC
Notably trying to set up the codebase is a lot more automatic now but the setup scripts do a similar thing in downloading the developer tools, git, repositories, other apps and files and configuration files.
