We’re excited to be launching the first online blended Introduction to Cybersecurity course for K12 this fall at CodeHS.
Each week in the news you’ll hear about a new cyber attack, or a major company or organization that was hacked. In a connected digital world, this has become commonplace. But as important data moves increasingly online, students need to know the basics of what that means, how to stay safe and secure, and some of the implications.
That’s what we’ll cover in the CodeHS Introduction to Cybersecurity course.
The modules are:
What is Cybersecurity?
Digital Citizenship and Cyber Hygiene
The ABCs of Cryptography
Software Security
Networking Fundamentals
Basic System Administration
This course is geared towards new students and new teachers who haven’t taken or taught a cybersecurity course before. It’s also robust enough to be used by CS teachers who have been teaching these topics for a while but are looking for a more modern way to teach it. Having some knowledge of coding will help, since we’ll be using code to explore some of these topics. The course is project-based, highly interactive and exploratory, and asks students to consider the implications of a more connected world.
We’ll cover basics — like passwords, digital footprints and digital security. We’ll cover common attacks — like phishing attacks. We’ll provide the context around networking, cryptography, and permissions. There’s a lot more too!
The course is meant to be a fun, friendly intro to the world of cybersecurity — a very relevant topic today that’s only going to get more important in the future.
We will be releasing a full Cybersecurity course for high schools, that can be used as a year-long course or a semester-long course. Like all other CodeHS courses, the full curriculum is free. Some of our units such as Cyber Hygiene and Digital Citizenship will be available as standalone units.
We also have a professional development course for Cybersecurity that will be available to take this summer.
