Today we visited Fort Mill High School and Garinger High School!
Today was a jam-packed day of workshops! We ran two workshops in the morning at Fort Mill High School then headed across state boundaries to run another workshop at Garinger High School.
At Fort Mill High School we presented to a wide range of students. Some had done a little bit of programming, but most had not. In the second class some students were preparing for the AP Exam. We did a short presentation to students, and then moved into workshop mode. The feedback was extremely positive and students were all excited to write their first Karel the Dog programs in JavaScript. For the AP students we got to work on reviewing the exam. We had a nice discussion about the different places you can use coding, and students were coming up with great examples.
We then headed over to our next workshop at Garinger High School. We had a full house of two classrooms (we had two different classrooms at once at Fort Mill as well) for a presentation as well as a workshop. The pacing really depends on how long the class period is. Luckily in both of these we had enough time for both, but sometimes with 45 minute class periods it is quite rushed.
When we asked the students, “What are you interested in and how does it relate to coding?” We got great answers all over. From being a detective, creating music, to working as a nurse, or being in the military, there wer applications all over the board.
